Job Overview:

Yen Press’s Managing Editorial department is seeking an assistant production editor to help manage its rapidly growing list of manga, graphic novels, light novels, and ebooks. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated grammar nerd who has an eagle eye for catching errors and enjoys puzzling over creative problems. They should also be up to the challenge of managing a brisk workload flexibly.

Responsibilities:

Manages, from a production editorial standpoint, light novel ebook quality review

  • Hires freelance ebook QAers and reviews their reports
  • Liaises with the typesetter to have corrections made to epub files
  • Ensures all corrections are implemented

Production edits, with supervision, a limited number of frontlist titles

  • Liaises with and traffics materials to Editorial, Design, and Production
  • Completes electronic manuscript preparation, including style coding in Microsoft Word
  • Hires freelance copyeditors and proofreaders and reviews their work
  • Reviews copyedited manuscripts, working in Microsoft Word to reconcile copyediting and editorial markup, and reviews all stages of manuscripts and text proofs
  • Collates editorial and proofreader marks in Adobe Acrobat
  • Checks that corrections have been implemented accurately in subsequent interior passes
  • Copyedits and proofreads cover and insert materials from original copy through final proof
  • Attends weekly print status meetings
  • Attends weekly digital status meetings

Supports other members of the Managing Editorial team by assisting with correction checks, sending materials to freelancers, prepping materials for the typesetter, applying for cataloging-in-publication data, etc.

Provides additional administrative support to the Managing Editorial team as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Effective organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines
  • Strong grammar skills and an eye for detail
  • Strong computer/MS Word skills, proficiency with Track Changes
  • Be aware that the assistant production editor will sometimes work on Mature titles (rated 18+)
  • Applicants must be able to travel to the Manhattan office once a week.

Optional Qualifications:

  • Experience with pdf markup a plus
  • Working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style a plus
  • Knowledge of or interest in manga, graphic novels, and/or light novels a plus
  • Prior internship or experience in trade publishing a plus
