Job Description

Seven Seas is looking to hire a new Editor to work on our translated manga and comics (including webtoons), as well as on novels and other books as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform editorial work on manuscripts to ensure they follow house style guidelines, meet quality standards, and remain faithful and accurate to the intent of the author(s)/artists(s).
  • Adapt/rewrite/polish manuscripts as necessary.
  • Work with Editor-In-Chief and Managing Editor(s) to send out assignments and ensure translation, adaptation, lettering/layout, etc. deadlines are met.
  • Collaborate with Editor-In-Chief and Managing Editor(s) to provide house style and quality assurance-related feedback and notes to Translators, Rewriters, Copy Editors, Letterers, Proofreaders, etc. as necessary.
  • Proofread/review the lettered/typeset book and provide a compiled list of any corrections needed to the letterer/typesetter.
  • Verify that all corrections have been made in revised files and provide additional notes if needed.
  • Review prepress files prior to being supplied to printer (and provide additional correction notes if necessary).
  • Review printer proofs for final approval upon request.
  • Write back cover taglines and blurbs for each new volume you edit.
  • Draft tip sheet, catalog, ad, and promotional copy and assist with other marketing needs.
  • Conduct cover and file checks when prompted for materials needing to be submitted for licensor approval.
  • Maintain a Series Bible of important names, places, and terms/phrases that appear in a series.
  • Optional: As necessary, directly make adjustments and corrections to lettered/typeset books using Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop (including, but not limited to, text corrections, line changes, reflow, centering, font size adjustments, adding/removing/fixing word emphasis, correcting stroke issues, art clean up, alignment tweaks, character and paragraph style changes, page number corrections, etc.) and upload corrected files for processing by Production. [Note: Must have Management approval and existing experience and/or training.]
  • Perform additional editorial tasks as needed.

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with both Microsoft Office and Google Office software, particularly basic word processor functions and spreadsheet formulas. Familiarity with Airtable and Slack is a plus.
  • Strong grasp of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Solid communication skills.
  • Willing to become familiar with our house style guidelines, script requirements, and correction formats and perform your duties in accordance with those stipulations.
  • Internet access with sufficient bandwidth to receive large work files.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with an excellent work ethic and the ability to be productive and efficient in a fully remote workplace.
  • Well versed in manga, light novels, danmei, and/or webtoons, and be familiar with English translated works from Seven Seas and other publishers.
  • Interest in working with Mature-rated books of all kinds is a plus.

Starting Pay: $50,000 a year.
