Seven Seas is seeking a highly organized Production Manager experienced with print comic/manga/novel publishing to lead our Prepress department and support the broader Production team. This individual will manage prepress workflows, ensure production schedules are met, and work closely with printers to uphold our high standards in printed media. A background in manga, comics, novels, and/or print publishing is essential, along with experience managing people.

Duties & Responsibilities include:

  • Management of the Prepress department and associated processes.
  • Assist with management of other Production departments, workers, and associated processes as needed.
  • Assign work to Prepress Technicians and/or other workers and freelancers in Production and ensure necessary deadlines are met.
  • Train Prepress Technicians, including maintaining and updating documentation and guides.
  • Perform performance reviews and mediations for Prepress employees and contractors, and assist in the same for other Production employees and contractors.
  • Interview new Prepress workers and/or Production workers.
  • Effectively work in a unionized environment where you will be part of the Management team and required to adhere to a collective bargaining agreement’s provisions affecting staff terms and conditions of employment.
  • Oversee, assist with, and perform prepress, print, and production-related tasks, including, but not limited to:
  • Ensure files meet required specifications and adhere to established internal standards.
  • Troubleshoot file issues (including formatting, layout, text, image, preflight, etc. errors).
  • Perform spine adjustments and other cover file fixes.
  • Create Bar Codes or UPC.
  • Finalize/export cover files (including spot gloss, effects, pantones, inside covers, etc.).
  • Finalize/export interior files.
  • Finalize/export files for posters, postcards, stickers, boxes, extras, etc.
  • Process and finalize/export corrections.
  • Deliver/upload files to printers.
  • Carry out communications/customer service with printers.
  • Review hard and soft proofs.
  • Upload backups of files to company servers.
  • Perform additional production tasks (lettering, retouch, design, etc.), as needed.
  • In conjunction with upper management, assign jobs to printers and request, audit, and approve printers’ quotes.
  • Meet with printer representatives to discuss print needs and resolve issues with print jobs including working as liaison in the event of printing errors to resolve issues.
  • Additional prepress or production related duties, as needed.

Requirements:

  • This job posting is limited to applicants who can work based on Eastern Time Zone hours (UTC -4), roughly 910 AM EST to 56 PM EST.
  • 3 or more years of experience working in the publishing industry required, working with printed English comic books, Japanese manga or other Asian comics, and/or English novel publications.
  • 2 or more years of managerial experience required; experience in a remote work setting preferred.
  • Experience lettering, laying out, or performing graphic design of comics, manga, novels, etc. preferred.
  • Extensive experience with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Internet access with sufficient bandwidth to download and upload large files.
  • Computer capable of working with high-resolution, 300/600/1200/2400 dpi, full-color and black & white artwork files without quality-loss or moire.
  • Must be able to work on titles that feature fan service, sexual situations, or other adult content (such as the type found in our Ghost Ship line aimed at mature male readers and our Steamship line aimed at older female fans).
  • Familiarity with both Microsoft Office and Google Office software, particularly basic word processor functions and spreadsheet formulas.
  • Willingness to become familiar with our house style lettering and layout guidelines.
  • Good communication, time management, and people skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to track and juggle high volumes of information.
  • Candidate should be proactive and self-motivated, with an excellent work ethic and the ability to be productive and efficient in a fully remote workplace.

Starting Pay: $65,000 a year.
