Seven Seas is looking to hire an experienced English-speaking Copy Editor/Proofreader. Copy Editors are responsible for copy editing or proofreading material and content produced by Seven Seas Entertainment for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, readability, and style. Additionally, Copy Editors will collaborate with editors, designers, and other team members to refine and improve the quality of our releases. An ideal candidate has a professional background in both copy editing scripts and proofreading manga/comics and/or novels, a sharp eye for detail, and the ability to balance an ongoing roster of multi-format projects with set deadlines.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Copy edit manuscripts, lettered/laid-out books, and page proofs for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and accuracy, based on various house style guides and The Chicago Manual of Style.
- Check page imposition, art placement, and art retouch in manga and other books.
- Assist with writing, copy editing, and proofreading cover blurb copy and other miscellaneous book text.
- Check copyright text and other licensor-required items.
- Assist with writing, copy editing, and proofreading promotional copy, book ads, website text, and marketing materials.
- Assist with reviewing prepress files.
- Check page imposition, art placement, and art retouch.
- Work closely with Managing Editor(s) and other Editorial staff to identify problems and solutions.
- Help maintain Series Bibles of important names, places, and terms/phrases that appear in a series.
- Perform additional editorial tasks as needed.
Requirements:
- 2 or more years experience as a copy editor and/or proofreader in the publishing industry; alternatively, an equivalent amount of time in relevant education or certification in copy editing. Experience working with comics/manga and/or novels strongly preferred.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word or similar word processing software. Basic experience working with PDFs and the Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
- Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style.
- Willingness to become familiar with our house style guidelines, script requirements, and correction formats and perform your duties in accordance with those stipulations.
- Good communication skills in articulating problems and sending feedback.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to keep on deadlines.
- Internet access with sufficient bandwidth to receive large work files.
Starting pay: $50,000 a year.
